Mallory Bruns Prof. Wall English 2327-001 21 November 2014 The Fight for Freedom Harriet Jacobs, in her narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, was born into slavery in the south. While her youth contained â€Å"six years of happy childhood,† a few tragedies and mistresses later, Jacobs spent many years in pain under the possession of her cruel five-year-old mistress, Emily Flint, and Emily’s father, Dr. Flint. Once able to obtain freedom, Jacobs spent most of her life working for the Anti-Slavery office in New York, in hope that one day she could make a difference in the world. â€Å"She sought to win the respect and admiration of her readers for the courage with which she forestalled abuse and for the independence with which she chose a lover rather than having one forced on her† (Jacobs 921). Linda Brett, the pseudonym that Jacobs uses to narrate her life story, endures the harsh behavior women slaves were treated with in the south during the nineteenth century. The dominant theme of the corruptive power and psychological abuse o f slavery, along with symbolism of good and evil, is demonstrated throughout her narrative to create a story that exposes the terrible captivity woman slaves suffered. The reality of slavery in the past, versus slavery today is used to reveal how the world has changed and grown in the idea of racism and neglect. Most people in this world have gone through some sort of journey or challenge to help them grow as a human being. So, that is why in both â€Å"Cathedral† written by Raymond Carver and The Island written by Caspian Tredwell-Owen we see character development and growth, because it is easy to relate to as a reader. While there is some difference between â€Å"Cathedral† and The Island that are evident, the similarities are pronounced by the journey and challenges to self discovery of the characters and confronting the unknown. Even though the journey is different for the narrator in â€Å"Cathedral† than Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta in The Island. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to.† (Carver 200). We realize that the narrator did not think much of Robert even before he has ever met him. After meeting him and trying to draw the cathedral, he was told by Robert to close his eyes and continue. At the end, we can see the growth of the narrator and his feeling towards Robert and blind men in general. When he’s told to open his eyes: â€Å"‘Well?’ he said. ‘Are you looking?’ My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn’t feel like I was inside anything. ‘It’s really something,’ I said.† (Craver 210) Here we see the narrator starting to feel sympathetic in a way. Trying to put himself in Roberts shoes, which has shown that he has come a long way in self discovery since the start of the story. In the movie, The Island the characters Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta develop from very simple character thinking they are going to an island. Instead they had to start learning about how to live in the real world and learn why they were created. When we meet both Lincoln and Jordan they think they are living in a world during an apocalypse and that there is a lottery that sends them to an island. This island allegedly has not been affected by the apocalypse.
